Russian mass-media often mix up Pattani province and Pattaya and called it “resort city”. Farangs usually don’t know too much about Pattani, except for it’s location on Thai Deep South, muslim-majority population and regular bombings. It’s not surprising because many governments advice their citizens against travel to Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, 3 provinces near the Malaysian border. From 2004 there is ongoing etnic and religious conflict between separatist insurgents and Thai government forces. From the 16th century Pattani province was part of former Sultanate of Pattani. Then its territory was conquered by Siam in 1785. Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 confirmed the rule of Siam over the Pattani region. Malay muslims make up about 88 percent of Pattani population. Travel to Pattani can be risky and very attractive experience, as we can judge by these Instagram photos.
